With an appointment to begin on July 1, 2027, The McLean Symphony seeks a new Music Director
The McLean Symphony (TMS), a 501(c)(3) non-profit agency with more than 60 talented performers and a deep-rooted history comprising of 54 years of musical performances, is seeking a talented and dynamic individual for the part-time position of Music Director. The Music Director leads a dedicated group of amateur musicians and is an advocate for TMS in the community, which encompasses McLean, Northern Virginia, and the Washington metropolitan area. In addition to serving as conductor for rehearsals and performances, the Music Director works with TMS Board to build and foster community relationships in and around McLean, VA.
Knowledge, Abilities, and Qualifications:
● Minimum of two years conducting experience.
● Extensive knowledge of symphonic music, with experience and strong passion for conducting orchestral music.
● Demonstrated ability to lead a community orchestra in preparation and performance.
● Demonstrated ability to manage rehearsal time efficiently.
● Stage presence and skills to effectively engage audiences during performances.
● Ability to work closely with a volunteer Board.
● Ability to work with amateur and semi-professional musicians.
Job Responsibilities:
● Selects repertoire, leads rehearsals, and conducts the performances of the TMS.
● Ex-officio member of the Board, attending meetings and reporting on the symphony.
● Serves as the orchestra's ambassador to the community, fostering relationships that will benefit the symphony with local music directors, area schools, local government, and businesses, including publicity and advertising.
● Maintains TMS operations within the budget set by the Board.
● Engages solo musicians and artists.
● Conducts all TMS regular Tuesday night rehearsals (7:30 – 9:45pm), dress rehearsals, and at least four performances per season.
● Works with the librarian to prepare all string parts including bowings.
● Ensures the orchestra has the necessary equipment and musicians for performances.
● Facilitates communication and maintains positive and productive relationships with and among the musicians.
● Abides by the TMS bylaws.
